March 2026
World Book Day has always been a memorable occasion for me. When I wasteaching, it was our annual chance to be off timetable, explore some amazing literature and above all dress up as one of our favourite characters from books we loved. The children always went above and beyond and the staff were also excited to become a character for the day. I've metamorphosized into Bellatrix Lastrange, The Wicked Witch of the East, Miss Trunchbull and Morticia Adams to name a few. (I can see a theme!). However, this year was a completely different twist and instead of going as a character, I went to visit a primary school in Suffolk as an author and illustrator of my debut book.
It was a wonderful day and the children and staff were welcoming and excited to see us. We read about the characters in the book, discussed their predictions of what would happen to 'Jet' and they were of course delighted to meet Oliver, one of the main characters. The children used their skills to come up with some wonderful vocabulary and we used our observational skills to recreate some of the illustrations. I have to say, I was mightily impressed with the pupils' drawings and definitely think we have an abundance of creativity in our children within Suffolk.
Although this was a very different way to enjoy World Book Day for me, it was a wonderful first, of which I hope there will be many more to come.
